Spinal Cord Injury

A spinal cord injury is one of the hardest and most traumatic injuries for anyone to deal with. A change in the functionality and mobility of a person due to an accident affects every aspect of life. Our office handles spinal cord injury cases in San Diego, California, and nationwide. These injuries are typically the result of serious car accidents, truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, or even pedestrian accidents in San Diego.

In almost all spinal cord injury cases, the injured person and their family should hire a lawyer to get help with the case. These cases are driven in large part by medical treatment, future medical treatment, and lost wage claims. Complicated medical records, expert witnesses who deal with spinal cord injuries, and life care planners are typically used in Court to show the extent of injuries and care needed for the victim of an accident. These cases can be fought hard by insurance companies who are trying to limit their exposure and what they ultimately have to pay. In any spinal cord injury case we recommend that the injury victim or their family not sign anything sent to them by any insurance company (even your own company), until a spinal cord injury lawyer examines the case.

What is a Spinal Cord Injury?

There are four sections of the spinal cord: sacral, lumbar, thoracic, and cervical. The type of injury that a person sustains and the effect on their body depends in large part on which part of the spinal cord is injured.

Sacral Spinal Cord Injury

If the sacral section of the spinal cord is injured, the hips, thighs, buttocks and pelvic organs can be affected by the injury. Injuries to this area can involve a loss of function in the hips and legs. There can also be a loss of control of bowel or bladder organs with a sacral spinal cord injury.

Lumbar Spinal Cord Injury

If the lumbar spinal cord is injured, the hips and legs can be affected by the injury. Injuries to this area can result in some loss of function in the hips and legs. There is also typically a loss of control of bowel or bladder organs with a lumbar spinal cord injury.

Thoracic Spinal Cord Injury

When the thoracic spinal cord is injured, the upper chest, mid-back, and abdominal muscles are affected by the injury. A thoracic spinal cord injury typically results in paraplegia due to the abdominal and lower back muscles being affected. There is very little control of the bladder or bowels with this type of spinal cord injury.

Cervical Spinal Cord Injury

A cervical spinal cord injury involves the head and neck region above the shoulders. This is usually the most severe injury because the injury is higher on the spinal cord. Injuries to this area typically result in tetraplegia or quadriplegia, with limited or no feeling or movement below the neck or shoulders.
