Tom started Rist Law Office in 2007 after working as an assistant prosecuting attorney and insurance defense lawyer. Since that time the office has grown to two locations that have served thousands of clients. Rist Law Office has successfully handled the most serious cases, including car accident fatalities, spine injury cases, mining accidents, large employment class actions, and crime victim cases for minor children.
Tom was born and raised in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. He graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in accounting, and from West Virginia University College of Law in 2002, where he was named Barrister of the Year. He is licensed to practice in West Virginia and California.
Tom has a proven track record of jury trial success including representing clients through verdict in state and federal courts in both civil and criminal cases. He has tried over 100 cases to a final verdict, and was recently named a Top 100 Trial Lawyer. He has achieved astounding results for his clients, including a $2,250,000 award in a wrongful death case resulting from a mine explosion and a $4,300,000 award in a wage and hour dispute on behalf of employees at a large corporation in California. He has experience in diverse areas of the law, with particular expertise in crime victim law, including child sexual assault, police sexual assault, and fraud cases. Since 2008 Tom has dedicated thousands of pro bono hours to fight environmental cases involving mountaintop removal mining, flood cases, water quality, and other cases important to communities in California and West Virginia. He has represented the Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council, and Coal River Mountain Watch in pro bono litigation.
Tom is an active member of the California and West Virginia Bar Associations, San Diego Bar Association, American Association for Justice, Surfrider Foundation, International Mountain Biking Association, and New River Bicycle Union. Tom is an avid surfer and cyclist who typically rides more than 5,000 miles each year split between mountain and gravel bikes. Every now and then he will also sit back and pick a banjo for fun.
